Raman spectrometry

Principle

Complementary method of infrared spectrometry, it studies the vibration of molecules from a scattered light coming from a laser (green) emitted through a focusing lens. Non-destructive, this approach is particularly effective for the identification of pigments and minerals, by comparing obtained spectra with reference databases.

This technique can also be used to study the modifications of minerals due, for example to heat.

Measurements

As the measurements are non-destructive, they can be performed directly on the object. But a sample of small size can also be studied.
